BRIT XVIII is hosted in Sarajevo by the Department of Geography, University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Science, in cooperation with the Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
University of Sarajevo
Established in 1949, the University of Sarajevo is the first and largest university in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a comprehensive public university with a central role in higher education, research and international academic cooperation in the country.
Faculty of Science
The University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Science was established as an independent teaching and scientific institution in 1960. It brings together education and research across the natural, mathematical and computer sciences through its departments, including the Department of Geography.
Department of Geography
University-level geography studies in Sarajevo began in 1950 with the establishment of geography within the Faculty of Philosophy. With the creation of the Faculty of Science in 1960, the Department of Geography became one of its constituent departments.
Today, the Department combines teaching and research in physical, human and regional geography, regional and spatial planning, tourism, environmental studies and geographic information systems. Through education, research, publishing and international cooperation, it has played a central role in the development of geographical science and education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina continues the tradition of the Geographical Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in 1947. Its mission is to advance geographical science, geographical education and professional cooperation.
The Society has a long tradition of scientific and professional activities and contributes to the organisation of geographical conferences and congresses. Together with the Department of Geography, it publishes Geografski pregled (Geographical Review), whose publishing tradition dates back to 1957.
