Bosnia and Herzegovina – A Distinctive European Borderland
Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in Southeast Europe, in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. Its geographical position gives the country important contact and transit functions. It borders Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro and reaches the Adriatic Sea at Neum.
Its territory is characterised by remarkable geographical diversity, connecting the Peripannonian landscapes of the north, the extensive Dinaric mountain system and the Mediterranean-influenced landscapes of Herzegovina. This physical diversity is accompanied by a rich cultural landscape shaped through centuries of historical interaction and territorial change.
The country’s current political-territorial framework was shaped by the Dayton Peace Agreement and comprises multiple levels of territorial and administrative governance. Together with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s wider geographical position, this distinctive spatial structure makes the country a particularly relevant setting for BRIT XVIII and for examining borders, territoriality, interaction and cooperation.
